Hong Dam

Untitled

The Butterfly’s Dream

Hong’s work is a journey of self-discovery. It explores the universal themes of love, loss, separation, but most of all hope. She uses images, words and materials that remind her of the past to bring together the different facets of her childhood memories. As a child who had to flee her homeland as a refugee her work embraces the feelings of her personal hopes and dreams. Her artistic use of words, colour, shape and form enhances the great tradition of storytelling, fusing the east and west cultures.

Artist Biography

Hong Dam was born in the 70s during the Vietnam War. In a world shaped by conflict and cultural divide, a young girl born to a Chinese father and Vietnamese mother is caught up in the middle of all this mayhem, observing the changing world around her. Hong Dam’s work is rooted in her extraordinary childhood experiences as an eight year old ‘Vietnamese Boat Refugee’. Hong’s exploration of displacement through art has come after a career as a digital artist in film. Her work has been exhibited in galleries such as V&A, Turner Contemporary and British Museum.
