SEAS-SAN talks: The Art of Blackness: Representations of Black British Culture in Contemporary Art

When the UK Art scene is overwhelming white, what does it mean to represent Black lives in these spaces? In this meeting the we will be discussing the realities of promoting Black British Culture from the perspective of Black creatives working within and beyond Brighton.

Miranda Forrester (she/her) Miranda Forrester is a figurative painter from London, currently dividing her time between London and Brighton. Forrester’s practice explores the queer black female gaze in painting. Her work is concerned with addressing the invisibility of womxn of colour in the history of art, and how painting can rearticulate the language and history of life drawing through a queer black feminist desiring lens. Depicting solo and coupled nudes, Forrester’s work explores intimate moments – fragments of domesticity in queer black relationships. Since graduating from the University of Brighton with a BA in Fine Art Painting, her work has been featured in several exhibitions at key galleries and museums, such asthe Mall Galleries, Christie’s Education and Copeland gallery, at the BBZ Alternative Graduate Show.

Chloe Austin (she/her) Chloe is an emerging curator, art historian and art writer based between Hertfordshire and London. She is the host and producer of the Institute of International Visual Arts’ (Iniva) Chatting in the Stacks podcast, which highlights the research of the Stuart Hall Library volunteers – covering a range of cultural topics from the policing of ‘black’ music genres to the celebration of noughties Black British cultural icons. Since completing her traineeship with the Barbican Centre and Iniva, Chloe has been focusing on developing her art writing practice. She shares her personal thoughts on her blog ‘Chloe’s Internal Monologue’ and has written for Black Ballad and Art UK – focusing on art historical topics related to diasporas.
